The Dualuse Bridge is a prestressed concrete beam bridge spanning a tidal river in Singapore built in 1968-1970.The bridge length is 18.16m with four lanes and without division line. Each side has a 1.5 m-wide sidewalk. In order to meet the requirements due to increasing traffic loads, the needs for the bending strength of the longitudinal beam are raised by the owner. During the construction process, the traffics of heavy trucks and container trucks shall not be uninterrupted. Through analysis and comparison considering multiple factors, the bridge system is transformed from a simply supported system into a continuous system. The original simply supported beam bridge is transformed into a continuous beam bridge with the integral abutments. The loading capacity of the bridge is improved and the expansion joints and devices are removed.
